Whisky With My Shoes

Why not pair whisky and high heels?

I’ve been known for two things my entire life: wearing high heels and being a whisky drinker. Completely unrelated, of course. That is, until I decided to combine the two with what I call Whisky With My Shoes.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know what I’m talking about. Whisky With My Shoes is my attempt at being creative and trying to break the mold of “bottle Instagram” accounts that post nothing but, well, whisky bottles. While most bottle accounts are just plain boring (sorry), the ones that aren’t are surprisingly impressive, featuring stunning backdrops, fancy bottles, and perfect photography. (My favorite accounts doing it right: Single Malt Alliance, Axis of Whisky, From Barrel to Bottle, At Least I Have Whisky, and Whisky With A View.)

Since I can’t compete with stunning backdrops (I’m not a fan of hiking let alone hiking while hauling whisky!) and don’t buy expensive bottles, I wanted a unique way to share my love of whisky on instagram.

How Whisky With My Shoes Got Started

Always the multitasker, one morning I was brainstorming how to take a unique photo of whisky while I got ready for work. One second I was thinking “how can I make this bottle of Barlow Trail whiskey look interesting” and the next I was wondering what I could wear with my blue high heels since I hadn’t worn them in awhile. Then, bam! I realized the two were the same shade of blue and thought they’d be fun together. (Here’s the Barlow Trail post, if you’re curious.)

When I realized my pink heels were coincidentally the same shade as Hyde No. 3 Áras Cask and my red ones perfectly matched Springbank 12, I knew I was onto something.

Then I started getting creative. Some of my favorite pairings have been one of my favorite whiskies, Bruichladdich’s Port Charlotte 10, with my favorite Vince Camuto Booties. Other favorites: Yoichi Single Malt with Kate Spade gold heels, Laphroaig and Glendronach with green Sam Edelmen heels, and Bunnbahbain 12 with red Guess heels.

How It’s Done

I take all the photos myself, thanks to my Nikon DSLR that allows me to snap the shutter on my phone through wifi. But it’s still more difficult than it looks! (The exception is the Octomore photo with my ankles wrapped in Christmas lights. My friend helped out with that one — and let me borrow her Christian Louboutins!)

The most difficult photo so far has been pouring the High West Campfire while having my feet in the air. While taking it with the timer, I spilled whiskey on my arm trying to get it right! (Luckily I didn’t drop the bottle on my face!) But it’s one of my favorite #whiskyWithMyShoes images.

Which Comes First: the Whisky or the Shoes?

Now the burning question is which comes first: a colorful bottle of whisky or a colorful pair of shoes? I joked when I bought the Glendronach 15 that I’d have to buy green shoes, but honestly I’d been shopping for a good pair of green heels for years. Now I had an excuse to buy a green Sam Edelman pair!!

But normally I don’t buy shoes to match my whisky. In fact, what used to be my shoe budget has transformed into my whisky budget! And, since I live in a studio apartment, I’m running out of room for both!

#WhiskyWithMyShoes

I wanted something that would appeal to whisky drinkers and non-whisky drinkers, and I think the fun juxtaposition of the two things entertains both. For more #WhiskyWithMyShoes, follow me on instagram or follow the hashtag (also #whiskeyWithMyShoes works too).
